FAQ
Focus Training
Flanker
FAQ
Game rules, scoring, and cognitive science background
What is Focus Training?
Focus Training is an online cognitive training game developed by Kuccy Studio, featuring six modes: Grid (visual search), Bounce (multiple object tracking), Circle (sustained spatial search), Focus Tap (selective attention), Flanker (executive control), and Memory (visuospatial working memory). Each mode targets a distinct cognitive dimension and competes on a global public leaderboard.
How does Grid mode relate to the Schulte Table?
Grid mode is inspired by the Schulte Table, named after German psychologist Walter Schulte. The traditional format is a 5×5 grid containing the numbers 1 through 25 in random order; participants must locate each number in sequence as quickly as possible, measuring visual search efficiency and attentional breadth. Focus Training extends this concept across grid sizes from 3×3 to 6×6, so difficulty scales with the number of cells.
Can playing this game actually improve attention?
Task-specific learning is well-documented: practice reliably reduces completion time and error rates within each mode. Whether those gains transfer broadly to everyday cognitive performance (far transfer) is an open question — the scientific literature on this point is mixed. Focus Training is an entertainment tool and does not constitute a medical assessment or cognitive rehabilitation programme. Consult a qualified professional for clinical needs.
How are scores ranked on the leaderboard?
Most modes rank by completion time in seconds, shortest first. Leaderboards are segmented by difficulty (e.g., grid size for Grid mode, ball count for Bounce mode) so scores are always compared within the same configuration. All submissions are validated by the backend API before being written to the database.
What anti-cheating measures does the leaderboard use?
Scores are validated by a Cloudflare Workers backend API before being written to the database. Each entry carries a server-side timestamp and integrity check; the client cannot write directly to the database. We reserve the right to review, remove, or block suspicious entries — see the Terms of Service for details.
Where is leaderboard data stored?
Leaderboard scores are stored in Cloudflare D1, a SQLite-compatible distributed database. This data is not used for ad targeting or shared with third parties. Your device also stores a local leaderboard in browser localStorage so you can review your personal history offline. See our Privacy Policy for full details.
How long should I train each day?
We suggest 10–15 minutes per session, with breaks between rounds rather than a single uninterrupted 30-minute block. Extended continuous play leads to attentional fatigue, which reduces both performance and learning benefit. A single session score that drops well below your average usually reflects fatigue or distraction, not a real change in ability.
What is the Flanker task?
The Flanker task was introduced by Eriksen & Eriksen (1974) and is a standard laboratory measure of executive control. Participants identify the direction of a central stimulus (typically an arrow) while ignoring flanking stimuli that may point the opposite way. Incongruent trials — where flankers and target conflict — trigger response competition that requires prefrontal inhibitory control to resolve correctly. Focus Training's Flanker mode presents 24 trials across three escalating difficulty stages.
How does Memory mode differ from the N-back task?
The N-back task is a standard working memory paradigm in which participants judge whether the current stimulus matches one presented N steps earlier, measuring continuous updating of working memory. Focus Training's Memory mode is a one-shot spatial recall task: players memorise the positions of nine numbers in a 3×3 grid, then reproduce the sequence from memory after the cards are flipped face-down. Both engage visuospatial working memory, but N-back stresses real-time sequential updating whereas Memory mode stresses complete spatial encoding and retrieval of a single layout.
What age groups is this suitable for?
The game is suitable for anyone with basic number recognition (typically from around age 6) who can use a web browser. There is no upper age limit. Children should play with parental supervision. This game is not intended for diagnosing or treating any cognitive condition.
Will leaderboard scores be wiped periodically?
We reserve the right to adjust score thresholds, remove suspicious entries, or clear leaderboard data during major service updates. Under normal circumstances, scores are not cleared without reason. See the Terms of Service.
Is Focus Training free to use?
Yes, Focus Training is completely free for all users. The site is supported by advertising. Using an ad blocker may suppress ad display but does not affect game functionality or leaderboard access.
